A Tale of Two Sisters (장화, 홍련 Janghwa, Hongryeon literally 'Rose Flower, Red Lotus') was adapted from from the Joseon Dynasty folktale Janghwa Hongryeon-jon.
Recently released form a mental institution, two sisters return home to live with their stepmother and father. It soon becomes clear that their stepmother is cruel and unbalanced and their father is of little help. Shortly after their return home the girls start experiencing strange occurrences in the house but are they really being haunted by a ghost?
A Tale of Two Sisters won Best Picture at the 2004 Fantasporto It is both the highest-grossing Korean horror film and the first to be screened in United States theatres. It grossed $72,541 in the US. An American remake of the film called The Uninvited (2009 film) starring Emily Browning and Arielle Kebbel as the sisters opened in 2009.
